British higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its 2025 Best Student Cities Rankings on June 18th, showcasing 150 top cities for students worldwide. Five Taiwanese cities made the cut: Taipei(26th), Hsinchu (84th), Tainan (97th), Taichung (117th), and Taoyuan (126th), solidifying Taiwan’s reputation as a prime destination for international students seeking a quality education and vibrant cultural experience.
When it comes to affordability, Tainan and Taoyuan rank 5th and 6th globally, thanks to Taiwan’s low tuition fees and cost of living. In terms of employment prospects, Taipei ranks 50th and Hsinchu 77th worldwide. As for quality of life, Taipei is ranked 56th, Tainan 95th, Taoyuan 101st, Taichung 103rd, and Hsinchu 105th.
In addition, Taiwan has recently updated its regulations to make it easier for foreigners to work and live in the country. Key changes include:
(1) Points System (Scoring Criteria) Revision: The total score for the work permit evaluation form increased from 190 to 200 points, while the minimum requirement of 70 points remained unchanged to qualify for working in Taiwan. required Internship experience is now worth 10 points, and government scholarship points have been doubled from 10 to 20. (2) Expanded Scope for Professional and Technical Work: The scope of eligible positions now includes roles in manufacturing (supervision, operations), financial services (securities, investment), and specialized technical work for social workers.
(3) Relaxation of Naturalization Regulations: Amendments to the Nationality Act will reduce the residency requirement for Foreign Senior Professionals applying for citizenship. The required period of continuous residence, previously three consecutive years with at least 183 days per year staying in Taiwan, will be shortened to two consecutive years
Taiwan is renowned for its safe, convenient, and high quality of life. This is reflected in its 2024 Global Peace Index ranking of 43rd globally and 7th in the Asia-Pacific. In the Happy City Index, Taipei (46th), Kaohsiung (64th), and Taoyuan (88th) score high in factors contributing to happiness. The 2024 Global Livability Index also includes Taipei (66th), Kaohsiung (72nd), and Taichung (74th) among the top livable cities, thanks to their excellent healthcare, low crime rates, and public transportation. Additionally, Taipei’s 16th global and 5th Asia-Pacific ranking in the Smart City Index showcases its advancements in transportation and internet services. This international recognition highlights Taiwan’s commitment to providing a safe, smart, and exceptional living environment.
Hermi Tran, the Vietnam Market Business Director at Cooler Master Technology, reflects on her five years in Taiwan since her arrival in Taiwan on a Taiwan scholarship in 2008. She was drawn to Taiwan by her family’s enjoyment of Taiwanese movies, positive recommendations by her friends, and Taiwan’s promising tech industry.
Hermi shares her pleasant experiences in Taiwan, highlighting the country's beautiful scenery and convenient transportation, which allows her to enjoy weekend activities like hiking with friends and cycling along the riverside. She was also impressed by the friendly attitude of the Taiwanese people. For instance, during the pandemic when PPE was in short supply, her supervisor expressed concerns and gave her masks, which she considered a precious gift during the difficult time.
Hermi values the experience she gained from working in Taiwan’s tech industry and emphasizes the importance of learning Chinese and Taiwanese culture for long-term career success. She also appreciates her ongoing involvement with Contact TAIWAN, which brought her valuable opportunities for professional and cultural exchange.

Indonesia is recognized for its vast pool of skilled labor and strong work ethic, as highlighted in reports by the IMD and QS World University Rankings.
(1) IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2024
In the 2024 IMD Competitiveness Ranking, Indonesia ranked 27th out of 67 countries evaluated, demonstrating excellence in corporate effectiveness, government effectiveness, and economic performance. Its notable strengths include a robust labor market, favorable tax policies, and a strong domestic economy.
(2) IMD World Talent Ranking 2023
In the 2023 IMD World Talent Ranking, Indonesia ranked 47th out of 64 countries, demonstrating strengths in one of the main categories: ‘Appeal, Readiness, and Investment and Development’. The country particularly excelled in apprenticeships (10th), senior managers competency (12th), skilled labor (13th), and employee training (14th).
(3) QS 2025 World University Rankings
Ten Indonesian universities rank highly in the QS 2025 World University Rankings, especially in the field of Engineering and Technology. The top-ranked Indonesian universities in this field are Gadjah Mada University (GMU, 316th), followed by Universitas Indonesia (UI, 320th), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB, 320th), and Airlangga University (UNAIR, 501st-550th).
